Understanding Beneficiaries in Life Insurance Policies

Choosing a life insurance policy is a significant step toward protecting your family’s financial future. One of the most critical decisions you can make is naming your beneficiaries. This choice determines who will receive the death benefit and verifies that that the financial support you’ve planned for reaches the right people at the right time.

The Role of Primary and Contingent Beneficiaries

Most policies allow you to name two tiers of beneficiaries:

  • Primary beneficiaries may receive the death benefit directly when you pass away. You can name one person, multiple people, a trust or a charitable organization.
  • Contingent beneficiaries may serve as a backup. If your primary beneficiary has already passed away or cannot be located, the contingent beneficiary can step in to receive the proceeds.

Without a contingent beneficiary, the death benefit may pass through probate, which can delay distribution and reduce what your family ultimately receives. We recommend that you keep both tiers of beneficiaries current after a marriage or childbirth.

How Do I Add Beneficiaries to My Policy?

You can adjust your beneficiaries through the following steps:

  • Contact your insurer or agent and request a beneficiary designation form.
  • Provide the full legal name, date of birth, and relationship of each person you are naming. Some insurers may also ask for a Social Security number.
  • Once the form is submitted and accepted, the designation takes effect and may override any previous instructions.
  • Review your beneficiary designations periodically, especially after major life events.
